Empress Menen ("Itege" in Amharic) served her beloved Ethiopia with dignity and grace during her long lifetime. She married Ras Tafari on Auguest 3, 1911. A mother of ten children, her philanthropic work on behalf of the poor is legendary; among her titles are the Light of Ethiopia and Conquering Lioness of Judah. She is the sole Empress in history to be crowned at the same time as the King, on November 2, 1930.
